Travelling with pets
So you’ve decided to go on a much awaited trip. But you really don’t want to leave your dog or cat behind. Just
like kids, pets need someone to take care of them, feed them, bathe them etc.
They are domesticated animals and cannot fend for themselves. Many people leave their pets at a friend’s or a
family member’s house to take care of them while they are away.
Travelling with a pet can be a challenge. If you are taking a short trip to a destination not too far away from
home, it is easier than if you are flying away to a whole new country. Animals react to a change in surrounding,
change in weather etc.
They are sensitive to new tastes, smells and sights. If they are used to a certain environment, they might find
it difficult to cope with your travel plans. Also don’t forget, not all places in the world are pet friendly. You
would not be able to take your dog into a museum or a shop. Even open spaces like beaches do not allow pets. Here
are some tips that you could be useful while travelling with a pet.
* Pick a place that you are certain, or at least think your pet will like.
* Open spaces are great for dogs. It’s important to pick your destination well. Going mountain
climbing with an old grey cat isn’t really a very smart move.
* If your pet suffers from an ailment, don’t forget to take the medication along with you. You
may not always get what you need at your destination.
* Take enough food. Even though some animals will devour anything you give them and would be
most willing to try out exotic cuisine, some might prefer their good old food.
* Allergies and reactions to new environments are common. Make sure you see your vet before you
leave and are equipped and prepared for anything. Book a hotel room with enough facilities for your pets.
* Book an airline which is easy on your pet. It pays to do your homework.
* Check out whether you can get an Animal Passport for your pet – this allows you to take your
pet to various countries without having to go through the quarantine procedures.
* Choose a good carrier so your pet is comfortable. Pets can get fussy sometimes, just like
babies. Be prepared to put up with whining and frustration, or even surprise and excitement.
* If you are going to a cold place and your pet isn’t really used to it, carry clothing or
blankets to make them comfortable.
* Most importantly, enjoy your time with your animal buddies. They love your attention and can
make your trip more fun and memorable than you thought it would be. Don’t ignore them at any point during your
travel.
There are a growing number of travel agencies who specialize in travelling with animals so research on the
Internet to look up pet travel.
